Preacher busted for bilking $ 3.8M from federal food stamp program

By Cornelius Frolik
A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Al-Idu Al-Gaheem to one year and one day in prison for his role in a scheme that bilked $3.8 million from the federal food stamp program, a newspaper reported
The Dayton Daily News said that Al-Gaheem, the former owner of two Dayton View businesses and the imam of Masjid At-Taqwa mosque, was the second of four defendants to be sentenced in the case. All four defendants have pleaded guilty.
Al-Gaheem faced as many as four years in prison after he pleaded guilty in August to felony charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, food stamp trafficking and structuring transactions to avoid reporting requirements.
Al-Gaheem, who previously was named Lawrence Phillips, was the owner of Five Pillars Market, 1263 W. Riverview Ave., and Riverview Cell & Cup of Dreams, 512 N. Broadway St.
Al-Gaheem worked and conspired with Abdul Yamini Sr., Abdul Qadir and Omar Yahya to defraud the food-assistance program. The men illegally paid customers 50 cents in cash for every $1 in food stamp benefits they redeemed.
Undercover law enforcement agents caught the defendants illegally trading cash for food stamp benefits and buying and selling products that are ineligible through the program, such as counterfeit clothing and firearms.
Authorities estimate that more than 1,000 transactions took place at Five Pillars Market that involved the illegal exchange of food benefits. The federal government deposited about $3.8 million into bank accounts controlled by Al-Gaheem and others as reimbursement for food benefits redeemed at Five Pillars.
Al-Gaheem repeatedly withdrew large amounts of cash from the bank account, but he always took out sums that were just less than the threshold that requires the filing of federal financial reports.
Al-Gaheem and the other defendants used the money they stole to renovate the Dayton View businesses and pay for personal expenses, such as rent, mortgage and other bills, said assistant U.S. Attorney Dwight Keller.
Keller urged Judge Timothy S. Black to give Al-Gaheem the maximum prison sentence to deter him from breaking the law in the future and also to send a message that this criminal activity will not be tolerated.
“Mr. Al-Gaheem is arguably the most culpable” defendant in the case, Keller said.
Al-Gaheem’s attorney James Fleisher argued that justice would best be served by placing his client on probation or house arrest, because Al-Gaheem is an important part of his community and some family members depend on him for caregiving and financial support.
Judge Black said although Al-Gaheem had an “extraordinarily impressive” record of good deeds and charitable actions, he could not ignore his role in the criminal enterprise by only giving him “a slap on the wrist.”
Black sentenced Al-Gaheem to the same prison term that he handed down to Qadir in November.
In addition to prison, Black also ordered Al-Gaheem to be placed on three years of community control after his release.
Al-Gaheem and the other co-defendants in the case will be ordered to pay $3.8 million in restitution to the federal government, even though authorities doubt that they can even come close to paying back the money they stole.
Yamini is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 20. Yahya is scheduled to be sentenced in late February.

Los Angeles, The Guardian Express: A man affiliated to a notorious motor cycle club has been arrested with 47 weapons for threatening to assassinate children belonging to an elementary school and his wife in Indiana on Saturday.

The man identified as Von.I. Meyer of Invaders Motorcycle gang has told his wife that he wanted to kill as many as he could”. His threats came just 48 hours after a crazed gunman assassinated 28 people including 20 children in an affluent town of Connecticut on Friday.
Von Meyer’s wife called police on late Friday after he threatened to set on fire and kill students belonging to Jane Ball Elementary School.
It was not known what types of weapons were seized from the home of Meyer and he is being held without a bond.

Under water volcanoes discovered off California

Unknown | 10:04 |

SAN FRANCISCO — Scientists have discovered one of the world’s weirdest volcanoes on the seafloor near the tip of Baja, Mexico.
Unlike most deep-sea basalt lavas, the rhyolitic lavas on the Alarcon Rise were very thick and pasty, like chunky peanut butter. As they emerged from the underwater volcano, they formed large, angular blocks, some of which tumbled down the sides of the volcano, eventually covering the sides of the dome in talus.

The petite dome — about 165 feet tall (50 meters) and 4,000 feet long by 1,640 feet wide (1,200 m by 500 m) — lies along the Alarcón Rise, a seafloor-spreading center. Tectonic forces are tearing the Earth’s crust apart at the spreading center, creating a long rift where magma oozes toward the surface, cools and forms new ocean crust.
Circling the planet like baseball seams, seafloor-spreading centers (also called midocean ridges) produce copious amounts of basalt, a low-silica content lava rock that makes up the ocean crust. (Silica, or silicon dioxide, is the main component of quartz, one of the most common minerals on Earth.)
But samples from the newly discovered volcano are strangely rhyolite lava, and have the highest silica content (up to 77 percent) of any rocks collected from a midocean ridge, said Brian Dreyer, a geochemist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The results were presented last week at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.
Researchers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered the volcano this spring, during a three-month expedition to the Gulf of California, the warm stretch of water that separates Baja from mainland Mexico. A remote-control vehicle explored the volcano, which is 7,800 feet (2,375 m) below the surface, and brought samples back to the ship.
“When we picked up the rocks and got them back on the ship, we immediately noticed that they were very low density, and they were very light, glassy and gray. They were not the usual dark, black, shiny basalts,” Dreyer told OurAmazingPlanet. “So we immediately knew that something was unusual.”
The volcano is primarily rhyolite and a silicic lava called dacite, said MBARI geologist Jennifer Paduan. “To find this along a midocean ridge is a total surprise,” she told OurAmazingPlanet.
These maps show the location of the Alarcón Rise, a 31-mile-long (50 kilometer) spreading center at the mouth of the Gulf of California. Along ocean spreading ridges like the Alarcón Rise, the seafloor is splitting apart as lava wells up from underneath.
CREDIT: (c) 2012 MBARI
Boulders and blocks the size of cars and small houses littered the steep slopes of the dome, the robot’s video camera showed. The gravelly debris is made of lava that resembles the ragged surface of an ‘a (rough, rubbly or blocky lava). The flows would have been deposited via large, avalanche like deposits, Paduan wrote on the expedition’s blog. A few ridges were composed of very strange, steeply dipping, lineated flows very different from the pillow-style appearance of deep-sea basalt, she wrote.
The researchers don’t yet know how the age of the volcano because their samples haven’t finished undergoing the necessary tests. The dome is probably several thousand years old, MBARI geologist David Clague said in an email.
Of more concern is the evidence for explosive volcanism, which is typical of rhyolite volcanoes, Paduan said.

“It’s only 100 kilometers [60 miles] from land. When the sun is setting, you can see Cabo,” she said. Both the Baja Peninsula and mainland Mexico near Alarcón Rise have cities and luxury resorts. The Gulf of California is also home to endangered sea life.
Rhyolite lava carries more gas and volatiles (things that are likely to cause explosions) than basalt, and when magma meets water, it vaporizes instantly, driving an even more explosive eruption. “There are definitely explosive deposits there, and that is of extreme concern, given that the ridge is so close to land and the tsunami potential of a big explosion there,” Paduan said. “We don’t know how explosive, and that is something we are definitely trying to figure out.”
The researchers also found Pele’s seaweed, or limu o pele, at another location on the 30-mile-long (50 km) ridge. These are little fragments of lava formed from explosive magmatic gas bubbles that implode when they hit cold seawater. “We did find evidence of mildly explosive eruptions on the ridge,” Paduan said.

Rhyolites have been found on spreading centers, but only above hot spots, such as in Iceland and the Galapagos Islands, Dreyer said. Hot spots are plumes that bring magma to the surface from deep within Earth’s mantle. There is no hot spot under the Alarcón Rise, he said.
Rhyolite lava typically occurs only on continents, such as in Mount St. Helen’s growing dome in Washington. One possible explanation for the bizarre composition of the Alarcón dome is that continental crust snuck into the molten rock below — the spreading center is young and continental crust lies close by. But tests of different isotopes (versions of elements with differing numbers of neutrons in the cores) in the lava samples revealed no evidence of contamination by continental crust, Dreyer said.
Another discarded idea was that a cold spot underlying the ridge cooled and crystallized the magma chamber that fed the volcano, leaving only a high-silica melt behind. The team’s current hypothesis is that the magma source had a high concentration of volatiles like water, sulfur and chlorine, maybe from an influx of seawater.

“It’s a work in progress, but we have found some of the glassy volcanic debris surrounding this feature has water concentrations of up to eight percent, which is pretty unusual for a spreading center,” Dreyer said.

The Alarcón Rise drifts apart at a relatively slow 2 inches (5 centimeters) a year. The segment is bounded by the Pescadero transform fault to the north and the Tamayo transform fault to the south, and is the northern extension of the East Pacific Rise. The vast majority of lava flows along the ridge are basalt. The rhyolite dome is about 5.5 miles (9 km) south of the Pescadero transform fault.

Millionaire’s dream of finding Latina girlfriend for Xmas vanishes in thin air

A millionaire who couldn’t find love on the ground went high-up in the air with a help of a billboard seeking for a girlfriend especially a Latina, but his hopes vanished in thin air when unknown persons destroyed the billboard in San Diego California.
The advertisement, put up Friday by the California real estate mogul, was vandalized the same day and completely destroyed over the weekend.
The damage was apparently due to the ill feeling caused within the Latino community by the conspicuous ad placed by the businessman, who appeared on the ABC television program “Secret Millionaire”.
Paskin, 63, paid close to $4,000 for the billboard, which read “All I want for Christmas is a Latina Girlfriend” and included an e-mail address so that anyone interested could get in touch with him.
On Friday some unknown persons ripped off the part of the ad showing the e-mail address, and over the weekend the ad was completely destroyed, leaving only the blank billboard.
The millionaire had previously made news for having handed out $125,000 in $10 bills in a Detroit neighborhood and for having paid a year’s rent for a woman who lost her family in a violent crime.
Paskin has not announced whether he will replace the billboard, but in a statement to the media said that before the damage was done he received thousands of e-mails in response.

Curvacious transgender to be grilled over her explicit pictures

Here’s smokin’ FDNY beat-down transsexual Claudia Charriez as only folks with $400-an-hour to burn have ever seen her before — posing nude on her escort service website.

Charriez is getting cross examined today in a sizzling-hot Manhattan assault trial, in which she is accusing hunky fire fighter Taylor Murphy of beating, biting and choking her during a heated love spat at a Midtown hotel last year.
The posting, on the sex services site transgay.com, is still live online — despite Charriez’s insistence during direct examination yesterday that she has given up being an escort, and hadn’t turned a trick since last Fall.
In it, she boasts of her 34D-22-34 measurements, and quotes a $400-an-hour in-call rate.
“The extreme dream TS fantasy!” the pre-op transexual’s ad proclaims. “With the body of a goddess and a face of an angel, standing at 5’9″ tall,” she fibs. She’d testified yesterday to being 5’7″.
“I offer role play and fantasy for those who like to indulge,” her advertisement continues.
Defense lawyer Jason Berland is expected to grill Charriez hard on the continued advertisements — taking a shot at her credibility as the DA’s star witness in the assault case.
First, though, Charriez must finish her direct examination by assistant district attorney Kevin Rooney. The prosecutor is spending the morning going through some of the nearly 1,400 email, text and phone contacts Murphy made to his curvy ex in the months after his arrest, in alleged violation of a judge’s order of protection.
The grilling was halted briefly at just after 11 a.m. when a woman in the young audience stood up, holding up copies of today’s tranny-vs-firefighter stories in the Post and the News, along with a copy of the 2011 un-official FDNY calendar in which Murphy posed shirtless as “Mr. March.”
“I love you Taylor!” the woman shrieked before being led out by court officers. The outbreak brought Charriez to gasping sobs on the witness stand, and Manhattan Supreme Court Justice A. Kirke Bartley ordered a recess, during which he said he planned to reprimand the shouting spectator.
Charriez had been in the middle of reading aloud from some of the offending communications.

“You freak-out mother f—er,” read one of Murphy’s more charming text-message missives. “You have a man,” he complained in the text of a rival he referred to as another “tranny chaser.” “And you played with my heart.”

A man has been arrested in state of Maine because he called police this week to complain that the prostitute he hired in March this year cut-short her time by 10 minutes than agreed.

Police in the old town of Orchard Beach has reportedly said that man Scott Pipher, 34, called police and told them that the woman he hired “didn’t perform his money’s worth and cut short her time by 10 minutes”.
Pipher is behind bars for engaging with a prostitute.
This incident was reported in March, but police moved into arrest both only recently because investigations continued about his claims of hiring prostitute. The alleged prostitute was apprehended via Craigslist website, where Krystal Harmon frequently advertised as an escort.

A woman was sentenced to two years in prison for spending nearly $ 80,000 to buy sex toys, clothes, undergarments, jewelry and electronics with a work-issued credit card.

The woman, Cynthia Low, 47, a former employee of Oklahoma State University pleaded guilty for embezzlement charges and was ordered to pay $ 84,000 as restitution. She was also placed under two year’s probations after she completes her prison sentence.
She resigned for her job in 2010. But was arrested following March on embezzlement charges after a tip from a fellow employee.
The card was given to her to make purchases for the chemistry department of the university.
The scandal came to light when auditors found most of the credit card receipts were either altered or forged.
Just before she began using the work-issued credit card, she and her husband have filed for bankruptcy, claiming more than $ 150,000 in debt.

The best seat on a passenger plane is: 6A

The best seat on a passenger flight is 6A, a survey has found.

The poll of over 1,000 airline passengers questioned respondents on their seat preferences, including which section and whether they chose window, middle or aisle seats.
The poll also delved deeper to find out if choices were influenced by lucky numbers as well as odd or even row numbers.
Combining these responses, flight search engine ‘Skyscanner’ found that the most sought after seat on a standard aircraft is seat 6A.
The survey supports previous studies which have found that the front six rows of the plane are the most popular, taking 45 per cent of the votes, and booking seats in this section on certain aircraft is actually eight pounds instead of the standard three pounds charged to pre-book seats in any other section.
More surprising is the number of passengers who prefer the window seat almost 60 per cent – compared to just 40 per cent who opt for the aisle, with less than 1 per cent choosing the middle seat.
“There is always a great rush to get on board and get that favored seat and I think it is really interesting that there are so many differing opinions on this.
“I just hope that the low cost carriers don’t find out that there is such demand for seat 6A and start charging a premium for it,” Skyscanner’s travel editor, Sam Baldwin, said.
The survey also found that the seat no-one wanted was 31E, a middle seat towards the back of the aircraft.
Other seats that ranked high in the survey were middle seats over the wings as passengers say they’re less likely to feel turbulence there.

300 teachers in “teacher’s jail” for misconduct in Los Angeles County

Unknown | 09:50 |

The Los Angeles Unified School District has established an unofficial “teacher’s jail” for teachers accused of misconduct and it’s costing the district a ton of money, claims the teacher’s union.

The LAUSD early this year was marred with sex abuse scandals. A teacher at an elementary school was arrested for molesting 23 children. His crimes came to light after incriminating photographs with children blindfolded surfaced. In another incident just outside of Los Angeles another elementary teacher was arrested for same offense.
The wave of crimes committed by the teachers prompted the district officials to introduce a zero-tolerance policy and according to new ordinance if any teacher is accused of misconduct, he or she could be removed from classroom and sent to teacher’s jail straight until investigations are completed.
According to newspaper reports an estimated 300 teachers are languishing in teacher’s jail and investigations could take as long as six months to one year.
But the Union bosses are furious over teacher’s jail. They are calling it “waste of money”. But they have failed to recommend any alternative plans for the teachers accused of misconduct.
They even have gone one step further by labeling it as “witch hunt”.
“What the LAUSD is doing is that they are using this process to get rid of the teachers they don’t like”, the bosses say.
According to them a teacher who was found guilty of tapping a student on the stomach was kept at teacher’s jail for 10 weeks.
But the LAUSD officials say their priority to create a safe environment for the students.

The naked truth: AIDS activists arrested for disrobing at House Speaker’s office

Three naked AIDS activists have learned the truth: never to take off their clothes in public.

The trio was arrested when they disrobed to protest against the spending cuts in HIV programs in the lobby of House Speaker John Boehner’s office on Tuesday.
The three women with words “Aids cut kills” on their backs had their arms linked with four other men before being taken into custody by police. According to news reports they chanted “people with AIDS under attack, what do,we do? Fight back”
On Thursday, Secretary Clinton is expected to announce a blueprint to end AIDS. The mandatory budget cuts will make this goal nearly impossible, resulting in at least 620,000 otherwise preventable deaths from HIV. The naked protest was timed to coincide with the World AIDS Day march of hundreds of AIDS activists marching from the Democratic National Committee to the offices of Congressional leaders to demand a stop to the sequestration budget cuts that will push the world backwards in the fight against AIDS. In May of 2011, the U.S. funded study, HPTN 052, proved that the AIDS pandemic could be stopped and we could see an AIDS free world in a generation if a small number of people were put on treatment around the world.
“The naked truth is that if President Obama and Congressional leaders like Speaker Boehner allow these budget cuts to lifesaving programs, global health programs will lose $689 million, while domestic AIDS programs will lose $538 million.”, said Eustacia Smith from ACT UP New York.

“Boehner and others in Congress think that they can gut lifesaving programs without any consequences. We are here to bare witness and expose the effect on their constituents.” said, Michael Tikili from QUEEROCRACY.

Nearly 16,000 violent crimes committed every day in U.S-report

Unknown | 14:52 |

An estimated 15,890 violent crimes are committed every day in the United States, a report has revealed.

Last year, 15,890 Americans became victims of violent crime each day. The rate of violent victimization increased 17% in urban areas from 2010 to 2011. According to Justice Department statistics, aggravated and simple assault accounted for the entire rise in total violence. There was also an 11% jump in property crimes during the same period.
Writing at The Crime Report, Mai Fernandez, the executive director of The National Center for Victims of Crime, suggests that the new Criminal Victimization 2011 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics represents “a wakeup call” for policymakers.
It’s also time for the government to devote more resources to helping crime victims, Fernandez argues.

“Although our nation spends hundreds of billions of dollars on our legal, criminal justice, and corrections systems, only a fraction (less than one-half of one percent) of that amount is spent on crime victim compensation, victim assistance, and federal technical assistance programs,” she wrote.
“As a result, victims are left to absorb most of the financial impact of crime themselves.”
