Australia has advised its citizens to avoid parts of Mombasa following the killing of Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo.
The Australian High Commissioner to Kenya Jeffrey Houston Conul said violence in reaction to the death is likely to continue hence need for caution.
“Further civil unrest is likely and Australians in the area should avoid all public gatherings and monitor local media for updates on the security situation,” said Conul.
He added the killing occurred in the vicinity of the main highway entering Mombasa from the north.
“Australians travelling in or out of Mombasa should avoid this route as further violence may occur.”
He said the embassy continues to advise Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in Kenya overall at this time due to the high risk of terrorist attack, civil unrest and high crime levels in the country.
The advisory was reviewed and reissued and the overall level of the advice remains at “Exercise a high degree of caution”, added part of a statement issued on Tuesday.
The violence that broke out following the killing of Rogo has left more than three dead and a dozen of people injured.
Property has been destroyed as the violence escalated.
The latest victim was a police officer who was killed in a grenade attack near a church in Kisauni where a gang planned to torch the place of worship on Monday.Read more
