General David Petraeus’ reputation was intact even though he stood tall in the midst of burning battle fields across the Arab world and in Afghanistan. But in the end a woman with an Arab background forced Petraeus, a decorated soldier to quit his job in disgrace.
The woman Jill Kelley (nee Jill Khawam) with a penchant to throw parties to America’s top military men at her $ 1.2 million dollar water-front home in Florida not only used her charm to use her military connections for her advantage. But was also able sweet talk a FBI agent, who blew the lid off a simple platonic relationship, which has rocked the foundation of the country’s military.
Jill Kelley’s, born to a Lebanese Maronite family was approached by Paula Broad well, who told Kelley to stay away from her man. But continuous correspondence forced Broadwell, who assumed that Kelley’s Levantine sex appeal would sideline her bombarded Kelley with unpleasant emails, which eventually opened up can of worms within the military circles.
When the emails became public, ironically on a late Thursday afternoon, Petreaus immediately submitted his resignation to President Obama, to the shock and dismay for Petaeus’s junior officers.
The next week the scandal widened when FBI discovered that Jill Kelley, married to a surgeon has been involved in bombarding General John Allen, the Commanding officer of U.S troops in Afghanistan with emails as 40 a day.
The communications were later branded as “inappropriate communications”.
On the course of the investigations FBI sleuths discovered that both, Kelley and Allen exchanged over 20,000 to 30,000 emails over a period of two years.
Meanwhile Broadwell, the woman who is in the center of massive scandal fled into seclusion.
Jill Kelley, a treasure trove of General Petraeus was not only able to mesmerize the military men in short-skirts, revealing tops and lawn parties, but was also able to convince the South Korean community in Florida to hand over a Honorary Consul title on a silver platter. She convinced the Koreans that she would be able to contribute to country’s economy with investment opportunities at a time when she and her husband were facing foreclosure of their “party home”.
She treasured her association so much with Koreans she ordered a special number plate “Honorary Consul 1JK”.
Two weeks ago when she called the cops about news crews camped out at water-front home, she told the cops that she was “honorary consul general” and whether she could have diplomatic protection.
The mother of three also used military planes to fly to the U.S capital on goodwill missions. She wanted millions of dollars from a New York based businessman to broker a financial deal.
Kelley was given fully access to MacDill air force base but was banned for life after she touched off the military mistress scandal.
As investigations continue, one thing is definite that there would be more resignations and embarrassments to the military.
