Muslims in Bangladesh have turned their anger at Buddhists after a man posted a photograph deemed offensive to Islam on Facebook.

Men armed with sticks, rocks and Molotov cocktails set fire to at least 12 temples and more than a dozen homes in a town named Ramu, 216 miles from Capital Dhaka, Bangladesh media and news agencies reported.
Officials have claimed that mobs comprising about 25,000 took part in anti-Buddhist violence.
“A man in the area uploaded the picture on Facebook”, the officials have claimed.

“In what turned out to be long hours of arson and vandalism, a mob destroyed 12 Buddhist temples and monasteries and more than 50 houses in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar early yesterday. The violence was apparently triggered by a Facebook posting of a photo defaming the holy Quran”, the Daily Star newspaper reported.
The mobs have also set fire to two monasteries and a Hindu temple. The Buddhist temples included two century old-Pagodas, revered by the minority Buddhists in Bangladesh.
Police officials said that they believe extremists group Rohingyas and Muslim militants were behind the attacks.

The person who was responsible, believed to be a state employee was whisked off to safety by policemen. “His Facebook account was hacked”, the officials said.
