U.S 3rd largest grocery chain closing 60 stores due to poor sales
Supervalu Inc., owner of the
Albertsons and Save-A-Lot grocery-store chains, plans to close 60 stores
to raise cash as it deals with slumping sales.
The company announced today that it will close 38 stores under the names Albertsons, ACME and Jewel-Osco; and 22 Save-A-Lot locations. Most will be shuttered by Dec. 1.
The company released a list identifying most of the stores that will close, and none are in San Diego County. However, eight stores slated for closure were not identified in today’s announcement because of ongoing labor negotiations. Those stores will close by Feb. 23, 2013, the end of the company’s fiscal year.
