Police said the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the traffic lights were out due to Hurricane Sandy.
The student, 21, Vishwaja Muppa was in the back seat in her friend’s SUV when the accident occurred.
Police officials said a police officer who was inside his car was seriously hurt and has been warded at a nearby hospital. Muppa is a student of the Long Island University and she was studying for her Master’s degree in Biology.
Dr Samuel L Stanley Jr blamed the Edison girl’s death on Hurricane Sandy.

‘Hurricane Sandy left a tragic casualty within the Stony Brook University campus community early on Tuesday morning,’ said the president of Stony Brook University in a statement on the university website.
On behalf of Stony Brook University, I extend personal and heartfelt condolences to Vishwaja’s family, her friends, her professors and all those who knew her,’ Stanley said.
