At
least five people including a six year old was killed and eight others
wounded when mortars fired from Syria struck a village in eastern Turkey
on Wednesday that prompted Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to
summon an urgent meeting with his officials, sources said.
The foreign minister also called UN-Arab special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi and United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon to discuss the deteriorating Syrian situation.
According to unconfirmed reports, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan put his troops on alert and whether Turkey is planning a counter attack was not known. In June this year after Syria shot down a Mig fighter Jet, the prime minister told a cabinet meeting that the country had changed the rules of engagement and would see any attacks by Syria as a threat.
The villagers in eastern Turkey have staged protests since the mortar attack and they have called on the government to ensure the safety of all inhabitants of Akcakle, where the mortars exploded.
A Turkish newspaper, Hurriyet Daily news reported that shells that hit the village came from Syrian army since the rebels do not possess such advance arsenal.
Unknown numbers of soldiers and rebels have been killed near the Turkey border, in fighting between Syrian troops and the rebels, where heavy fighting is raging for the past 20 days.
