A
former African leader was fined an undisclosed amount by French custom
officials on Thursday when he attempted to smuggle bush meat, mainly
monkey, weighing 20 pounds into France.
The French custom officials said that former central African Prime Minister Martin Zigele was carrying the monkey-meat in his luggage when he arrived at the Charles de Gaulle airport from Bangui, the capital and the largest city in Central African Republic.
Zigele was Bangui Prime Minister between the periods of 2001-2003.
According to the custom officials the ex-leader has said that the meat was for his personal consumption.
Consuming monkey meat is forbidden in several countries as they are classified as “protected species’.
