Apparel manufacturer gap was forced to pull out a black and White colored T-shirts emblazoned with words “Manifest Destiny” after shoppers branded them as racist towards the Native Americans.
The slogan was used in 19th century by America to describe the expansion into the Wild West.
The Change.org site where people could start a petition demanded Gap to discontinue the “Manifest T-shirt and issue a formal apology to Native Indians.
“GAP is selling a black shirt with the words “MANIFEST DESTINY” written on it. This article of clothing promotes a belief that has resulted in the mass genocide of indigenous people, and it serves to normalize oppression. This shirt is marketed to teens and young adults, and it gives no context for the racism and inequality that persists in our society, to this day, as a result of this doctrine. We are asking that this shirt be discontinued, and that an apology be issued”, the petitioners said on Change website.

Gap immediately removed the controversial T-shirts off the shelves, but an estimated 5,000 petitioners are demanding a formal apology for ‘Manifest Destiny that was the catch phrase which led to the genocide of millions of my people, millions of Indigenous people throughout this country.’
