A
bomb planted in a car ripped through a crowded market outside an
anti-Taliban campaign headquarters north of Peshawar in Pakistan on
Saturday killing at least 17 people, officials and media said.
The attack comes just few days after two Taliban gunmen shot and wounded Pakistan’s youngest award winning peace activist in the same province. Immediately it was not clear who was responsible for the attack, but government officials in the province said it was carried out by Taliban to show of force and to prove that they pose a threat to US ally Pakistan.
The car laden with C-4 explosives went off near the anti-Taliban peace committee office that was formed by a group of village elders to prevent further infiltrations of Taliban militants.
The dead and wounded were transported to nearby hospitals.
A local minister demanded the federal government to launch an immediate offensive against the Taliban militants.
“These Taliban have killed our innocent people in so many attacks. They are still killing our people. Instead of wasting time, we should hit them back, and we should do it as early as possible to save the precious lives of our innocent girls like Malala Yousufzai,” he told reporters in Peshawar.
Dawn newspaper contributed to this report.
