A
police officer who struck a woman during a peaceful Puerto Rican parade
has been fired and the Mayor of Philadelphia has said he was appalled
and ashamed watching the video which went viral last week.
“I have watched it 20 times and every time I look at it, I am appalled, I am sickened and I am ashamed on behalf of the good people of the Philadelphia police department, Mayor Michael Nutter has told NBC Philadelphia.
The video on You Tube was watched by more than a million people since the incident. The video shows, the officer, Lieutenant Jonathan Josey sucker punching the woman, Aida Guzman, who has admitted spraying silly string near the officer but not at the officer.
Another unidentified person appears to throw something “liquidly” at the officer. After officer Josey hit the victim, she was handcuffed and led to a police car. She was charged for disorderly conduct.
Since the incident Guzman has hired a lawyer and according to her attorney she is afraid to go back to Philadelphia.
Charges against Guzman by Philadelphia police were dropped on Wednesday.
Josey is a 19 year veteran with Philadelphia police.
