China, India, South Korea and Taiwan spent a staggering $ 224 billion in 2011 on defense, a report published here said on Monday.

The spending in China and the three countries doubled in last 10 years and would surpass Europe’s military expenditure, the report published said.
“With Asian defense spending projected to overtake that of Europe by the end of 2012, the United States’ posture rebalancing toward the Asia-Pacific region is likely to continue,” it said.
China is the leader of the pack, the defense budget in China has quadrupled since 2000. China now ranks behind United States.
In 2011, Beijing spent $25.8 billion on new weapons and related research and development, up from $7.3 billion in 2000, the report said. However the report acknowledged that the figures could be much higher as China’s defense budget grew from $ 22.5 billion to 89.9 billion in the last decade.
India’s defense budget grew 47.6 percent while Japan’s budget increased to nearly $ 60 billion from $ 40 billion. South Korea’s budget swelled to $ 29 billion from 17 billion and Taiwan spent 10 billion in 2011 compared to eight billion it spent in 2000.
