Turkey’s troops on red alert, Russia demands explanation on grounded Syrian plane with 17 Russian citizens

Turkey’s government has put its troops on red alert over simmering tensions along the border with Syria.

Turkey has also detailed several hundred troops and has moved arsenal of weapons. The new measures come just a few hours after Turkish military jets forced a Syrian passenger plane to land at the Ankara’s international airport.
Just in: The Russian embassy in Ankara has demanded for explanation why the plane that was carrying 17 Russian citizens has been grounded.

The Turkish media stated that Chief of General staff Gen. Necdet Özel visited the border on Tuesday.
“We want to give a strong message to the Syrian regime that Turkey is determined to protect its borders and people and is ready to do whatever necessary – that is the meaning of high-level readiness,” a high-ranking official said, the newspaper Hurriet Daily news said.
