Animal
rights activists are outrageous over accusations that employees of
zoological gardens in Southern Sweden allegedly beat animals to death to
save money on veterinary care, Swedish media reported.
Caroline Ryding, the former zookeeper at Oland Animal Park has said a goat and a coati were beaten to death with a baseball bat because the privately owned zoo owners couldn’t afford a vet and they had no room for them.
“The coati, known as Brazilian aardvark, was killed on the orders of the owners”, Ryding has said.
However, a spokesman for the zoo, Hans Uhrus has denied the allegations stating the animals were being looked after well with visits from local vets and county officials.
Ryding has also said she left her job because she could not stomach the ill-treatment meted out to the animals.
Previous employees have told a local radio station that an ape died at the zoo after a miscarriage.
