FBI investigating whether insider aided mob to enter U.S consulate in Libya
The
Federal Investigations Bureau (FBI) is investigating whether an insider
assisted the Libyan extremists to enter the U.S consulate in Benghazi
in which four diplomats including the ambassador was killed on Tuesday
night.
Media outlets in U.S reported that attacks were carried out with the assistance of the Libyan security forces and some photographs suggested the presence of Libyan soldiers in their official uniforms standing in the vicinity of the US embassy.
A Libyan security source has suggested that an insider would have tipped off the mob on an annex in which four Americans were hiding. Two of them later died and the others sustained injuries. The New York Daily News said that while the attackers were firing at the embassy, the Ambassador Chris Stevens disappeared and his body was later returned to the U.S embassy.
The attacks on U.S consulate is not new. In recent past there had been several attacks on international community in Benghazi, there had been attacks on International Red Cross Society, A British Convoy, Tunisian Consulate, and U.S Consulate previously, but the Libyan government has failed to bring perpetrators to justice. The inability by the government will certainly weaken the confidence of foreign investors and there are fears by economists whether Libya would be dragged into a “deep” economic turmoil.
“It is quite probable that many officials both in government and the security services know who is responsible for these attacks and yet have failed to take action for fear of the consequences. This has to stop”, editorial of a local newspaper said.
The Libyans must not forget without the international support which was spearheaded by U.S government they would have never been able to over throw the previous regime. During transition period violence is expected within the political parties that have vested interests but violence should not be directed towards the international community that helped Libya to limp back to normalcy without a dictator who ruled the country for 40 years.
Meanwhile in Indonesia police officers were poured on to the streets to prevent any attacks on US embassy after intelligence reports said that at least 300 men and women were planning to hold demonstrations after Friday’s prayers.
