The attacks came just 24 hours after, the militant group vowed to regain the lost territory due to operations by U.S led Iraqi forces. It was not known immediately how many were involved in the attack, but according to AFP reports at least 75 persons are still at large and 33 others were captured during search operations.
“All those who escaped are hard-core members of Al Qaeda organization”, we will not stop till we capture them”, a government official was quoted.
According to reports the prison was re-taken by the security forces and chief of the police in the region has been asked to step down immediately over the attack.
Specifics of the attack were sketchy, but according to some government officials, the attack was launched after a suicide member exploded a car bomb just outside the gates of the prison. “The attack was well planned and executed meticulously”, the sources said.
It is understood when the outside forces launched the attacked, the inmates grabbed the weapons from the jail guards after locking them in a cell.
The Al Qaeda group has posted several messages in Jihadist websites and has vowed to carry out a campaign of vendetta in Iraq to regain territory.  Tikiri was the ancestral home of deceased Saddam Hussein, who was executed just months after capture.
